South African judge Navanethem "Navi" Pillay won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her decades-long efforts to promote peace and international law, including her work prosecuting genocide and war crimes as a judge at the International Criminal Court and International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.[1]
Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering how to make chemical reactions produce only one mirror-image form of a molecule, solving a century-old mystery about chirality that has enabled the manufacture of countless pharmaceuticals.[2]
The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) radio telescope has detected the faint glow of hydrogen from approximately 8 to 9 billion years ago using only its own observations, proving a new way to map the distant universe and study dark energy.[3]
Nearly a century after physicist Hans Bethe predicted them in 1931, scientists at the University of Innsbruck have created and observed "Bethe strings" — unusual quantum states where particles bind together without chemical bonds — by cooling cesium atoms to near absolute zero and trapping them in one-dimensional tubes.[4]
Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope pinpointed the host galaxy of the most distant fast radio burst ever detected, a millisecond-long signal from more than 10 billion light-years away that originated just 3 billion years after the Big Bang, more than doubling the previous distance record.[5]
The James Webb Space Telescope found strong evidence that the rocky lava world HD 3167 b has an atmosphere despite orbiting its star every 24 hours under extreme heat, a surprising discovery that could help scientists understand how rocky planets retain atmospheres and what early Earth may have looked like.[6]
China and the European Union reached an agreement to "moderate" Chinese hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicle exports to the EU, a deal that could prevent several million Chinese cars from being shipped to Europe over four years and avert a full-blown trade war between the two economies.[7]
South Korea successfully test-flew its first domestically developed hypersonic weapon, designed to travel at least five times the speed of sound and evade missile defense systems, bringing Seoul closer to what it says could be game-changing weapons capabilities.[8]
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Britain is open to Germany joining the GCAP fighter jet programme — a partnership with Italy and Japan to build a new-generation combat aircraft — after meeting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin.[9]
Northrop Grumman's Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft was released from the International Space Station after delivering about 11,000 pounds of supplies, scientific investigations, and hardware during its nearly six-month stay at the orbiting laboratory.[10]
